Reading at Home

I am honored to share in your child's journey to becoming a successful reader. Below are a few suggestions for promoting a love of reading and helping to build success:

1) Read to your child. This will offer him or her the valuable opportunity to listen to a fluent reader. And, of course, spending time together is completely invaluable!

2) Allow your child the chance to see you reading frequently: magazines, newspapers, novels, etc.

3) Ask your child questions about the book that he or she is currently reading. If you can, read the same book that your child is, so you can discuss it together naturally. If you can't read it, that's okay! Asking questions is still beneficial, even if you might not know all of the answers! Here are some questions you can ask to encourage your child's thought process and discussion of his or her reading:

Which character did you like best? Why?

Are you like the main character? Why? How?

What is the biggest problem that is happening in the book?
What do you think the characters will do to solve that problem?
What does this book remind you of?
Would you read any more books like this? Why?
What do you think will happen next?  Why?
What do you think should happen next?  Why?
